Certified Contractors Get Edge

The efforts of TCA and ACI to introduce certification to Tilt-Up construction are now being reportedly rewarded through the specification requirements of projects around North America. Recently, a school construction project in Windsor, Nova Scotia, demonstrated the competive edge that certification can give your company. The Windsor West Hants High School was the first reported project that pre-qualified bids from contractors whose staff had passed the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) Tilt-Up Technician and Supervisor certification course. Similarly, a project for the City of Fort Lauderdale Building & Zoning Department became the first reported occurance of a project requiring the direct supervision by an ACI Certified Tilt-Up Supervisor. Current Tilt-Up Supervisor Certifications By Residence for both Supervisor and Technician certifications are shown on the four figures shown below.

TCA sponsors the certification program, available in Supervisor and Technician levels, in conjunction with the American Concrete Institute (ACI). Full certification as a Tilt-Up Supervisor requires a passing score on the exam (70 percent) and a minimum of five years (7,500 hours) of verifiable construction experience, of which at least three years (4500 hours) shall be as a Tilt-Up Supervisor or assistant supervisor, as well as a demonstrated proficiency in and an understanding of overall on-site administrative and technical management for producing Tilt-Up projects. Those lacking the sufficient work experience to qualify as a Tilt-Up Supervisor may become certified as a Technician by successful completion of the same written examination. The examination consists of approximately 80 multiple -choice questions.

There are currently over 290 accredited techincians and over 90 certified supervisors in the Tilt-Up/ACI program. As shown in Figure 4 there are five Certified Tilt-Up Supervisors in the State of Wisconsin. Those five Certified Tilt-Up Supervisors are all employed by C.E. Doyle LLC., and its subsidiary, Doyle Contractors. Those five employees are Don Doyle, Herb Galligan, Dean Gassner, Ron Nisleit, and Craig Olson. By the middle to end of summer C.E. Doyle LLC, and Doyle Contractors projects to have all of its field employees and supervisors take the certification exam and become certified, therefore allowing our firm to provide the best possible on-site management and personnel for our clients.
